John M. Barrett also known as "Dogie" was one of 62 cowboys in Captain Seth Bullock's Cowboy Brigade. They took their horses to Washington DC in March of 1905 to ride in the inaugural parade to honor President Teddy Roosevelt.

"Dogie" Barrett served as a livestock representative for the Mallory Commision Company out of Souix City, IA for ten years and covered the western Dakotas and eastern Wyoming and Montana. After that he worked as a representative for the Souix City Stock Yard. He later worked for the Ward Commision Company out of Chicago, IL.
