George W. Batten, 91, of Pitman, NJ, died Tuesday, October 19, 2010, in the Health Care section of Pitman Manor, with his family at his bedside. Born in Chews Landing, NJ, he was a life-long resident of Washington Twp. George served with the Army during World War II from 1941 to 1946, attaining the rank of Technician Fifth Grade. In 1944, while in France, he was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

He also received the European African Middle Eastern Compaign Ribbon with one bronze star, the American Defense Service Medal and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Hurffville, the Elwood Kindle American Legion Post 49 in Pitman since 1948, and Disabled Veterans of Woodbury.

He was a life member of Hurffville Volunteer Fire Company, Station 10-3, in Washington Twp., a life-long member of Pioneer Sportsmen Club of Pitman, and for many years volunteered as a member of the Board of Directors of Ranch Hope for Boys. George also served on the Washington Twp. Board of Education for 15 years and on the Washington Twp. Board of Elections for 48 years. He enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gladys L., nee Cassaday; his two sons, David G. of Stuarts Draft, VA, and Edward A. and his wife, Nancy, of Emerald Isle, NC; 4 grandchildren, Violet (Troy) Powers, Ros (Desiree) Batten, Jonathan (Erica) Batten, and Katie (DJ) Hoessle; and 2 great grandchildren, Brandon and Kevin Batten.
