Our community was grieved to learn of the death of Mr. William Gumby [sic] who had been sick for some time at the home of his daughter in St. Louis. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved daughters (Montgomery City Leader, June 13, 1930)
----------
Because Michael Landwehr’s research indicates that the mother of brothers William Jacob and David R. Gunby was “Margaret Best Oliver,” was Margaret born a Best and first married an Oliver? Oliver and Gunby census entries Montgomery County, MO, were reviewed. It’s possible that Margaret Best married a Joseph Oliver prior to her marriage to John W. Gunby. Children of 1850 were Oliver; children of 1860, certainly William and David, are Gunby...those of John W. Gunby and Margaret Oliver Gunby nee Best. Is the Rice O. Gunby of 1860 the Josephus Oliver of 1850?

Contributor Linda Thank (48078155) shares, in 2018, below regarding William Jacob Gunby's father:
"John W. Gunby had a minimum of 3 marriages. He married his 1st wife in Worcester, MD in 1848 at which time he was also enrolled in the Mexican War; he also was enrolled in the Iowa War; he had a land certificate in Big Springs for service. He divorced his 1st wife in 1850 in the courts of St. Louis for adultery…. Research finds a marriage record for "Jacob GAMA" to "Paulina SEITZ" in the records of marriages in Ste Genevieve County MO for the year of 1863. Because of German settlements and language issues this is likely the same couple who are in the John W. Gunby State Census of Missouri for 1876. There is a Deed of Dower to Paulina Gunby in 1875 for in Montgomery Co., MO by reason of abandonment by the spouse John W. Gunby."

Images from the Worcester County Library are copied for reader perusal, but refer to Dr. John Gunby, Find A Grave Memorial 69046238. Open to interpretation, the first two papers appear to be probate papers of Dr. Gunby. Online sources and the memorial list Dr. Gunby’s death in 1886; however, additional sources suggest a death circa January 1875: Gunby will, 22 Jan 1875, Coshocton, Ohio, and The Coshocton Age (Coshocton, Ohio), 1875 February 19, newspaper article report that Dr. John Gunby had died within the year (1874).
Whether, or how, the William Jacob Gunby (of this memorial)(1853-1930) may be related to Dr. Gunby remains unknown.
