Funeral services for E.J. Batson, 84, of Madisonville were conducted Saturday, March 1, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Madisonville. Bro. Johnnie Crocker and Rev. Vaughn Tatum officiated. Graveside services with Military Honor Guard were conducted at the Willowhole Cemetery in North Zulch. Batson was born on Aug. 29, 1918, in Madisonville to Edgar Jackson and Lucy Pearl (Roberts) Batson, and died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, in Waco. He had lived in Madisonville for over 20 years, and was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army, where he was held as a prisoner of war for 42 months during the Bataan Death March. He was a member of the Quan and of the Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his parents; and nine brothers and sisters. Survivors include wife Mildred Batson of Madisonville; son Don W. Batson and wife Carrie of Marble Falls; sister and brother-in-law Lera and Joe Harris of Madisonville; sister-in-law Elna Batson of Friendswood; and two grandchildren, Lezli Poe and husband Ryan of Madisonville, and Kristen Batson of College Station. Pallbearers included Vance Nickerson, Steve LeMaster, Bobby Strawther, Jim Ryland, Dan Douget, Joe Shaddix and Ashley Blagrave. Honorary pallbearers included the Faithful Worker's Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Admiral Nimitz Foundation, 328 E. Main, Fredericksburg, Texas, 78624. Madisonville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
