SSGT Steven V. Nagy, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Cumberland County, NC.

SSGT Steven V. Nagy was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Reserve, SSG Nagy served our country until July 27th, 1969 in Laos. He was 32 years old and was married. It was reported that Steven died from multiple fragmentation wounds. His body was recovered. Steven was born on July 10th, 1937 in Budapest, Hungary. His name is on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial panel 20W Line 59.

Born Istvan Nagy in Hungary in 1937, he survived the Nazi occupation of his homeland, then Hungary's domination by Communists. Before his 20th birthday, he took up arms against the Communists during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. After the failure of that revolution, Nagy fled his homeland, escaping to Austria and Germany and finally to the United States. He settled in Whiting, Indiana on January of 1957, living at 1211 W. Fred St. with an aunt and working at Youngstown Sheet and Tube.

In the fall of 1958, Nagy enlisted in the U.S. Army in Special Forces. While stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, he met and married his wife, JoAnne Holmes. Later he was posted in Germany. Their son, Steven Nagy Jr., was born in Weisbaden, Germany.

Returning to the states after his discharge in 1962, Nagy and his family came back to Whiting, living in two different apartments until May 1966. Steven Nagy also returned to his former job at Youngstown Sheet and Tube.

It was during this time, Nagy applied again for active duty with the military and asked to be sent to Vietnam. This was his crusade, to fight Communism," Tom Clark (history teacher at Lake Central High School in St. John Indiana and currently serving in Iraq) said of the man he and his students have studied.

He served as a Staff Sergeant with Reconnaissance Team Crusader, Control Center North, Military Assistance Command-Vietnam, Special Operations Group, 5th Special Forces Group. Special Forces Vietnam.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal(s) and The Good Conduct Medal(s).
