Major Hilger was Col. Jimmy Doolittle's second-in-command during the training and operations for Tokyo Raid in 1942. John and his crew were number 14 to take off from USS Hornet on his way to attack Nagoya, Japan.


Married Ina Mae Smith on 1 March 1931 in Atoka, Oklahoma. They divorced before 1937.

Graduated from Texas A&M with a bachelor of Science Degree in 1932.

Married Virginia Hope Botterud (25 February 1916 Wisconsin - 2 October 1998 San Antonio, Bexar, Texas) in Los Angeles, California on 15 March 1937.

His ashes were scattered off the coast of Newport Beach, California, in the Pacific Ocean.
