He was a member of the Sixth Avenue United Methodist Church in Lancaster and a successful life-long farmer. He graduated from New Holland H. S.in 1939 where he excelled in track and field. He was state champion in the 220 hurdles and held the Central District 100-yard dash record for a number of years before it was broken.
