Gala, Florine Lucille "Lucy"
of Grass Lake, formerly of Ann Arbor, age 85, passed away Monday, November 20, 2006 at Cedar Knoll Care Center, Grass Lake, MI. Florine Lucille Beal was born July 22, 1921 on Prospect Hill in the Irish Hills, Onsted, Michigan, the daughter of Frank Royce and Julia Etta (Newberry) Beal. When she was 5, her father chose to return to his birth name of Brazee, after losing his own mother at an early age, and being raised by the Beal family. Lucille Brazee attended Morenci schools graduating in 1936, and Ypsilanti Normal College (Now E.M.U.). She worked for Argus Camera where she met Jan Gala whom she married on July 28,1946. After raising her family, she returned to work at Sears in the catalog department. "Lucy" bowled for many years beginning at Century Lanes, continuing to bowl for over 50 years as the last survivor of her original team, ending at Colonial Lanes. She also bowled on the granny league (with her daughter Sandy) at Belmark Lanes. She attended both the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti Assembly of God Churches. She was a really great mom and friend. Survivors include three sons, Thomas (Mena), Richard (Janice), Dennis (Barbara) ; one daughter, Sandra; six grandchildren, and former husband, Jan Gala, all of the Ann Arbor area; a brother Ronald Brazee (Lou Ann) of Adrian; cousins Wayne Middleton of Ann Arbor, and Ray Middleton of FL; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death her parents, a sister Helene Humpich, and a grandson Jason Micheal. Her kids concede they miss mom's cooking as she was the best. Her wit and sense of humor remained with her to the end, and she will be remembered as well for her smile. She suffered with Alzheimer's disease for many years. A cure may someday be found. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Cedar Knoll Care Center in Grass Lake where she received loving care. We appreciate all you have done for our mom. Thank You. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 25, 11:00 am at Assembly of God, 2455 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 with Pastor Ed Eliason officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery, Ann Arbor. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 3- 8 pm and on Saturday from 10-11 am. Memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Knoll Care Center, 9230 Cedar Knoll Drive, Grass Lake, MI 49240, the Alzheimer's Association, or the Autism Society.
