Brigadier General. Following in his father's footsteps, he enlisted at the start of the Civil War, making rank quickly. For his gallant and meritorious service he received two brevetted ranks; the first to Captain on December 13, 1862 (after the Battle of Fredricksburg), then to Major on July 2, 1863 (during the Battle of Gettysburg). He also took part in the battles of Yorktown, Richmond, Gaines' Mill, White Oak Swamp, Mavern Hill, Second Bull Run, and Antietam. After the war he continued to command within the 3rd United States Infantry, participating in several Indian campaigns. He commanded a regiment during the Battles of El Caney and Santiago in July 1898 and participated in the Philippines insurrection from 1899 through 1902. He retired on July 27, 1903. His wife, four sons and two daughters outlived him.
