Rites Friday in Greenwood for Mrs. Spencer

Funeral services were held Friday morning at 11:00 o'clock at the First United Methodist Church of Greenwood for Mrs. Sadie Smith Spencer, 75, who died Wednesday, November 21, at University Hospital in Jackson after a long illness. The services were conducted by the Rev. B. F. Lee and interment was in the Sidon cemetery with Wilson and Knight of Greenwood in charge of arrangements. The body had lain in state at the McCarley family residence Thursday evening.

Mrs. Spencer was the widow of the late Louie C. Spencer of McCarley and the mother of former Congressman Frank E. Smith Jr. by a previous marriage to Deputy Sheriff Frank Smith who was killed in line of duty in 1926. Another son, Fred C. Smith, was killed in action in World War II while serving in the Navy.

She was active in all phases of the Methodist church and was well known as a musician and church worker.

In addition to her son, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. E. E. Thorne of Fort Wayne, Indiana; a sister, Mrs. Mims Boswell of Kosciusko; and two grandchildren. Also surviving are two step children, L. C. Spencer Jr. of Greenwood and Mrs. Virginia S. Richmond of Memphis.

Pallbearers were Gordon M. Smith, Harry Roland, E. G. Perkins, Jr., Bill Womack, Louis Spencer, Jr., Prince Spencer, Jimmy Mullen and Wally Carpenter.

Among the honorary pallbearers were J. W. Sanders of Wall, Lt. Gov. William Winter, Former governor J. P. Coleman, Rep. Clarence Pierce, Roy Wilkes, Fred Mullen, F. E. Loper, Marion Luther Felts, John Barrentine and Mickey Wallace.

The family requests any memorials be made to Millsaps College.
