Lillian M. Cunningham was the eldest daughter of Sheriff Thomas Cunningham & Catherine Quirk.
Lillians husband was the owner of the S. Confer Company, which in 1891 began construction of a new jail for Sheriff Thomas Cunningham. Construction was completed in 1893 at the cost of more than $90,000. The new building was regarded as the finest prison in the country. The jail had its own gas well which supplied fuel for heating and cooking. Cunningham's Castle, as it became known, was located on the northwest corner of San Joaquin and Channel Streets in Stockton, California.
