Miles Englehart passed away at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital & Medical Center in Portland, surrounded by his three children. Miles was born in Yakima to Oramil Philip Englehart and Ruth Benton Englehart. The family moved to Portland in 1931, where he spent the rest of his active life. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marjorie Englehart Tisdale. Miles attended Ainsworth Elementary School, Culver Military Academy, and Northwestern University. He married Carol Chambers in 1951 and had three children. After serving in the army in 1951, he returned to Portland and worked for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co., for whom his father was the general agent. He succeeded his father in 1958 as general agent for the state of Oregon. He was active in the Life Underwriters Association and the Portland Junior Chamber of Commerce, serving as president. He was honored by the Jaycees as one of three outstanding young businessmen in the state in 1960. He was also president of the Portland Japanese Garden Society for which his father had been the founding president. He was a longtime member of the Multnomah Athletic Club and a past member of the board of trustees. After his insurance career, he was associated with Windermere Realty Group in Portland. Miles enjoyed the outdoors, especially hiking and backpacking, and had spent many summers with his close friends and family at Spirit Lake in Washington. He enjoyed time with his daughters in the mountains and lakes of Montana and northeastern Oregon, and hiked the trails of the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood into his 70s. Miles is survived by his three children, Ann Desch of Helena, Mont.; David Englehart of San Jose, Calif.; and Jane Both of Lostine; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, David Englehart, of Orinda, Calif.

There was a gathering of friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009, in the Hospitality Room at River View Cemetery.
