Donald (Don) A. Augustine, 77, of Sandwich passed away at his home on April 25, 2009. He was born on November 30, 1931 in Sandwich to the late Malcolm and Sally (Walseth) Augustine. He graduated from Sandwich Twp High School in 1950, where he played football, basketball and excelled in both sports. He always supported Sandwich schools and its sports, attending the education dinner dances and was a member of the Castle Challenge for Sports Boosters. After high school Don joined the Navy where he was a pipe fitter on the destroyer the USS Hyman during the Korean War from 1950-1954. He married Suzanne Sheidecker on December 28, 1952 in Sandwich. After the Navy he worked for Oatman Dairy, then started his business Augustine Painting Co. and years later invited his brother, Ken to join him and Augustine Brothers Painted was established and served this community for 49 years. Painting many area farms and homes. Don was involved in many activities in Sandwich and was a well known person. He was a member of the Sandwich Federated Church and served as a Deacon. Lions Club member and served for 50 years. Sandwich Moose Lodge # 1016, the American Legion Post 187 for 61 years, he was an alderman for the City of Sandwich for eight years, and served on the Sandwich Fire Department as their latter Captain for 20 years. He played Santa Clause for the Franklin Mall Project which he really enjoyed. He was an avid Golfer and member of Edge Brook Country Club, and spent any hours playing cards with the boys there. He was a Sandwich Fair Board Director and served as Treasurer since 1986. He was the Superintendent of the grandstand and enjoyed everything about the fair. He started showing hogs at the fair as a child and ever since he had a special place in his heart for the fair. In 2000 he was Grand Marshall for the Freedom Days Parade and umpired Lille League Baseball for 15 years. He supported his sons Bowling team with Augustine Bros Sponsorship. He is survived by his three sons, Gary (Terrie) Augustine of Sandwich, Steve (Jeanne) Augustine of Raymond, IL and Bruce (Karol) Augustine of Bixby, OK; one daughter, De Ann (Frank) Moran of Sandwich; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Augustine-Borneman of Sandwich; grandchildren, Jill (Brandon) Corder of Virginia, Olivia (Jordan) Anderson of Sandwich, Ryan and Sarah Augustine of Sandwich, Nichol Augustine of KY, Nathan Augustine of Raymond, IL, Kristi Augustine of Bixby, OK, Derek Moran of Somonauk, Kailey, Suzanne, Austin Moran of Sandwichp; two great-grandchildren, Miles and Cooper Corder and one due in June; his special friend, Sally Kuester of Somonauk. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Suzanne on September 30, 1993; son, Brent April 15, 1994; brother, Ken December 31, 2001; and his special friend of 14 years, Carol Van Winkle January 14, 2008. Funeral services will be held Thursday April 30, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Federated Church Sandwich. with Rev Ken Ritchie officiating. Interment to follow to Oak Ridge Cemetery Sandwich. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at the Beverage Family Funeral Home Sandwich Chapel from 3- 8 p.m. on line condolences maybe made at www.beveragefamilyfh.com
