He retired in 1943. As a young man he worked along with his father and brothers as a farmer. He was the pitcher for the Downingtown baseball club for several seasons during the latter part of the 1890's. John was a member of Hopewell Methodist Church.
He died on a Saturday in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Thomas of Lyndell, he had been in failing health for the past few years.
John was buried 15 Jan 1958 in Hopewell Church, Chester Co, Pennsylvania
