CORP. CO. G 44TH REGT. NY VOLMr. Depuy was the son of John M. DePuy, Sr., and Caroline Russell DePuy. He was a Private and a Corporal in Co E and Co G, 44th NY Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He served from 11 Sep 1861 until 8 May 1865, and participated in all regimental battles of the Civil War until wounded at Fredericksburg. He was previously wounded at Hanover Court House. He also participated in the battles of Yorktown, Gaines's Mill, Malvern Hill, Turkey Bend, Antietam, Shepardstown Fork, Wilderness, Laurel Hill, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Gettysburg, Petersburg and Old Church. Following the end of the war, and mustering out, Mr. Depuy was briefly a prison guard at the prisoner of war camp at Hart Island, Long Island Sound, NY. Later, Mr. Depuy was a Newburgh Police Officer from 1876 until his retirement in 1908. His four brothers also served as Union soldiers in the Civil War.
