On 9 Dec 1860 Stephen, 28, married Ann Eliza Brown, 20, daughter of William and Margaret (Corbett) Brown, at Westmorland, New Hampshire. They had at least eight children.

On 2 Apr 1862 Stephen mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Fitchburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 30 years and 2 months old.

On 17 Sep 1862 he was wounded at The Battle of Antietam, in the thigh.
On 19 May 1863 Stephen was reported as having deserted from the hospital.

On 27 Jul 1864 he ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts.

He and Ann were enumerated in the 1870 US Federal Census on 2 Jul 1870 at Keene, New Hampshire, and in 1880 they were enumerated in Chester, Vermont.
Still later, in the US Federal census on 23 Jun 1900 they were living in Revere, Massachusetts.
