Cherrie Salema Ward Floyd, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Charleston Heights, passed away September 9, 2009.

Born January 21, 1913 in Lake City, she was the daughter of the late James Henry Ward and Salema Carter Ward.

Mrs. Floyd was valedictorian of her high school senior class in Lake City and graduated from Winthrop College in 1934 with a degree in French and English. She later attended the University of South Carolina and Appalachian State, receiving her Masters degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of national and local honor societies.

She taught French in a Florence County high school in the late 1930s, and after moving to Charleston in 1942, she taught 2nd grade in Ben Tillman Elementary School for over 30 years.

While attending Charleston Heights Baptist Church, she was a member of numerous committees and taught Adult Sunday School Classes for over 20 years. She spent her last 16 years at Sandpiper Village in Mt. Pleasant, where she taught many Bible Studies.

She is survived by her daughter, Yvonne F. Gagnon and husband, John, of Charles Town, WV; son, James Burris Floyd and wife Barbara of Edenton, NC; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Floyd Buchanan, wife of her deceased son, William C. Floyd, III of Wando; nine grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Claude Floyd, Jr. and her son, William C. Floyd, III.
