A newspaper clipping of his death says: North Ghent; Busy time here with farmers. Death has visited our neighbor & taken away one of our dear friends, Mr. Alphonso Billings. His death occured 5th of May. (tombstone has May 6th) He was 65 yrs of age. A wife, 4 daug, 3 sons are left to mourn his loss. His funeral was held here last sabbath at the church, with a very large attendance. Rev. Eldridge of Rome officiated in a very feeling way. His family have the sympathy of the entire community. His son Charles, who was killed in the Civil War is buried next to him, & is listed on the same stone. Alphonso is listed on his father's will. The will of George Billings was filed on April 26, 1861 in LaSalle County, Illinois, and he left Alphonso the sum of $1.00.
