Prominent Rockingham Citizen
Mr. Bowman was a well known Rockingham citizen. He was the son of the late William H. and Emily Huffman Bowman, of Pleasant Valley. He lived in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood until he was 21 years of age. Then he went to Goods Mill where he was employed for 11 years in William H. Michael carriage shop. Later he established a carriage business of his own, and the product of his plan soon won a high reputation for quality and there was a large demand for carriages of his make. Ill-health forced him to retire from the carriage manufacturing business, and he bought a farm and engaged in farming until nine years ago, when he retired from active work and lived near Penn Laird.
Engaged in Insurance Business.
Mr. Bowman for twenty years was one of the appraisers of the Rockingham Mutual Fire Insurance and was active in the work of his company. He was an active member of Friedens Evangelical Reformed Church and served as an elder of that church until nine years ago when he moved his membership to the McGaheysville Church of the same denomination. On March 1, 1886, Mr. Bowman married Miss Ocie Ola Michael. Eight children were born to this union, the oldest dying in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Floyd Leavel and Mrs. Arthur Fristoe, of Greensboro, N.C., Mrs. Martha Meyerhoeffer, of Washington; Charles Bowman, of Pineville; Harry Bowman, of Port Republic; Miss Lucy Bowman, at home. Brothers and sisters, who survive, are Mrs. A.L. Minnich, of Spaders Church; Miss Ora Bowman of Harrisonburg; George Lynn Bowman, Kingfisher, Okla.
