On 10 Sep 1861, at the age of 18, Alanson enlisted at Whitmore Lake, Michigan in Company G of the Third Michigan Cavalry. He enlisted for 3 years and took the muster oath on 14 Oct 1861. He re-enlisted on 10 Jan 1864 at LaGrange, Tennessee and was promoted to Full Corporal on 19 Jan 1864. He was promoted to Full Sergeant before he was mustered out at San Antonio, Texas on February 12, 1866.
