Dorothy Mae Lavender, daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother passed away on August 22, 2009. She was born November 1, 1927 and was a long-time resident of Galena Park. She was preceded in death by her husband, Denny M. Lavender in 1996. Dorothy was always a straight A student and graduated from high school with honors. She continued her education through the University of Houston Business Administration program. Her motto was "You can never get enough education". She was a long-time employee of W.T. Grants in downtown Houston before working for Sakowitz. She loved to sew, making Christmas stockings for her grandchildren. Family and friends will never forget Christmas times had at Dorothy and Denny's home. Dorothy was a loving, kind soul whose generosity knew no bounds. She was a consummate correspondent, never forgetting anyone's birthdays and/or anniversaries. She was always ready and welcoming of visitors and, no matter how long one stayed, she'd always say "well, you don't have to rush off!". Then she would always wave as you drove away until you were out of sight. She will be deeply missed by everyone that knew her - family, neighbors and friends at First Baptist Church of Galena Park where she was a member. Dorothy was laid to rest at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery on August 27, next to her beloved Denny and her mother, Ruby M. Sloan.
