Lillian was an only child born to Dr. Thomas Runnels Clement and Juliette M. Harshorne. The family is found in Mont Vernon, Hillsborough, New Hampshire in the 1860 census where Thomas is working as a cabinet maker.

In 1870 they have moved more than 70 miles north and are living in Enfield, Grafton, New Hampshire where Thomas is now a physician and surgeon.

Lillie first married Benjamin Lancy, on 30 Jan 1879 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. They had one child: Benjamin Clement Lancy b 17 Nov 1879 in Centerville (Barnstable), Massachusetts. In 1880 they are living with his widowed mother and sister in Provincetown, Massachusetts and Benjamin is listed as a lumber dealer. Later court records show Lillie eventually divorced Benjamin on the grounds of desertion, decree effective 20 Oct 1891.

On 3 Nov 1891 in Boston, Lillie married John Stephen Twombly, son of Stephen Twombly and Mary Ann Goodwin. The marriage record documents that it was a 2nd marriage for both of them, gives their birth places, parents names and notes that he was a merchant, and she, a musician. They had no children. This is confirmed in the 1900 census when she records that she's had just one child.

The 1900 census finds John, Lillie and her son Benjamin living in Brookline, Norfolk, Massachusetts with 3 servants in the household: a housemaid, a cook and a coachman.

Sadly, John took his own life on 19 Sep 1922 and some newspaper accounts mention that his wife was ill but no further information could be found on exactly what happened to Lillie at this time.
