Mr. Walter L. Smelser, 79, of Frederick, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born on July 29, 1930, he was the son of the late Willie and Rose (Shomo) Smelser. He was the longtime companion of Jean Shugars for 31 years.
Mr. Smelser is survived by his children, Nora Collins and husband, Joe, of Hubert, N.C., Linda Wagner and husband, Robert, of Dacula, Ga., and David Smelser and wife, Sharon, of Baltimore; step-children, Gale Smith, William Smith and wife, Lori, and Troy Shugars of Frederick and John Shugars of Baltimore; as well as 12 grandchildren and special grandson, Brandon Shugars. He is also survived by his sisters, Jean Bowman and friend, Bob, of Westminster and Joann Ludwig and husband, George, of Eldersburg; and brother-in-law, Earl Richmond.
Mr. Smelser had numerous nieces and nephews and will be missed by special friends, Tootles, Linda, Teddy Bear, Tommy and Margie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Willie Smelser Sr.; and sisters, Mae Carricoffe, Frances Harlow, Evaline Baker and Margie Richmond.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Eric Stephens will officiate. Interment will be in Utica Cemetery, Utica.
