Staff Sgt. Merle J. Andrews, jr., only son of Mr. and Mrs. Merle J. Andrews, was reported missing in action in an official telegram to the soldier's parents last night. Staff Sgt. Andrews was stationed in North Africa as an aerial gunner with a Flying Fortress unit. He attended local schools and was graduated from Springfield High school in 1938. After graduation he worked for his father, Merle Andrews, master plumber. Staff Sgt. Andrews enlisted in the air corps on Aug. 18, 1941. He has a sister, Loretta.

Mr. and Mrs. Merle J. Andrews, sr., yesterday were advised by the war department that their son, Staff Sgt. Merle J. Andrews, jr., was killed in action in North Africa Jan. 11, 1943, while on an aerial mission with the Ninth army air force operating out of Cairo, Egypt. Sergeant Andrews, previously reported as missing in action on Jan. 16, 1943, was assigned to duty as an aerial gunner aboard an army Flying Fortress commanded by Lt. Col. John Payne of Texas, at the time of his death. He was trained n the ground mechanics school at Chanute Field, Rantoul; the aerial engineering school at Davis-Monthan Field, Tucson, Ariz., and the Las Vegas, Nev., aerial gunnery school. Sergeant Andrews, born here Feb. 26, 1920, was a graduate of Springfield High School. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament church and memorial services for him will be conducted later.
