Philip Cleland Services Friday
Funeral services for Philip J. Cleland, 81, who lived his entire life in Clay County, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Methodist Church. The Rev. Russell Tarver will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of the Wagner-Iverson Funeral Home.
Mr. Cleland, retired farmer, died Monday in Dakota Hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Cleland was born Dec. 21, 1885 in Vermillion, the son of Peter and Nellie Kimball Cleland. He married Cecelia Walz Feb. 10, 1909 in Vermillion. They lived in Spirit Mound Township before moving to Vermillion about 20 years ago.
He was a 50-year member of International Order of Odd Fellows, Vermillion lodge. Through the years Mr. Cleland served on the school board, township board and was associated with the ASC office.
Survivors include, the widow; four sons, Lester of Van Nuys, Calif.; Ervin P, of Vermillion; Philip W. of Bellflower, Calif. And Lauren F. of Sioux Falls; a daughter, Mrs. Garland (Phyllis) Denton of Lakewood, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Lauren Adamson, Rex Ashmore, Elmer Ellison, Ellery Ahlgrim, Theordore Leikvold and Alfred Miller. Organist will be Marlys Miller.
