He was born August 21, 1897, in Logan county, Ill., to John C. and Augusta Schmidt and lived on a farm south of Martinsburg until his retirement when he moved to Ottumwa six years ago.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ottumwa and Masonic Lodge AF and AM 206 of Martinsburg.
On September 5, 1918 he married Trieva E. Smith in Ottumwa. She survives.
Also Surviving are three sons, J. Harold of Kansas City,, R. Carl of Keswick, and Robert L. of Route 7, Ottumwa, 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Schweitzer and Mrs. Fred Ritter; and one brother, Henry D. of Mason City, Ill.
A Masonic service will be today at 7:30 PM at the Fremont Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be Tuesday at 2 PM in Fremont. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.
