Biography of John Robert Stewart (1783-1815)
John Robert Stewart was born in 1783 in Foss, Parish of Dull, Perthshire, Scotland, the third child of Robert Stewart and Jane Wilson. In 1786, his parents and their three oldest children (plus one born on the boat, eight more to come) immigrated to Johnstown, Montgomery County (now Fulton County), New York.

Growing up on the family farm in Johnstown (one of the towns created from Caughnawaga in 1793), his siblings were Alexander, Catherine, James, Charles, Christian, Jane, Robert, Joseph, Daniel, William and David, all named in his father's 1837 probate records.

John Robert married Grace Stewart (same surname) in Johnstown about 1808, a Stewart relative also born in Scotland, from one of several Stewart families that settled in Johnstown after the U.S. Revolutionary War.

John Robert and Grace had three children, who were recorded in the registers of the Presbyterian Church of Johnstown. The three children were also mentioned in Grace's will, signed 20 Sep 1862. All three were also named in the 1837 probate papers of John Robert's father Robert Stewart.

- Christy (1809-1875, never married)
- Jane (born 1811-1896, never married)
- Robert John (1814-1882, married Elizabeth Stewart, same surname)

John Robert's life was sadly cut short at age 32, leaving Grace a widow with three very young children. A soldier during the War of 1812, he died of swamp fever in Nov 1815 in Sackets Harbor, New York. Surviving her husband 55 years, Grace passed away on 14 July 1870, aged 90.

There are headstones for John Robert, his wife Grace and their daughters Christy and Jane, who never married, in Johnstown Cemetery. Their son Robert J. Stewart, who married Elizabeth Stewart (same surname) and lived in Lenox, Madison County, was buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Oneida, Madison County.

John Robert Stewart's middle name Robert was identified in his immigration record in David Dobson's Scottish Settlers in North American, Vol. II. John was also referred to as "John R. Stewart" in his wife Grace's War of 1812 pension application and his headstone inscription.
