JENNIE WADE SHAFT HERE ON JUNE 27
A short dedication ceremony is planned in Falls Cemetery at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon June 27, of the monument erected to the memory of the late Jennie Wade who bequeathed her estate for the education of the community's youths.

Announcement of the date for the dedication of the Georgian granite shaft, which has been purchased and properly inscribed as the memorial, was made Thursday following a meeting of the committe on arrangements. The group consists of Hubert F. Oswalt, Mrs. Kelso Slayman, Mrs. Robert Wenger, John Daywalt and Owen J. Neighbors. Details on the dedicatory program will be announced nearer the date of the event.

A fund of $304 was raised last year from persons who had benefitted in the past from assistance from the scholarship fund established by Miss Wade. Two citizens of Wabash also volunteered contributions. All of the money has been spent in the purchase of the monument, for transportation and the cost of installation. The marker was obtained through Homer T. Showalter.

Miss Wade died about a quarter of a century ago, leaving an estate which now amounts to approximately $30,000, and the interest on which is available as college scholarships to deserving applicants.

DEDICATE JENNIE WADE MONUMENT IN FALLS CEMETERY SUNDAY.
In dedicating the monument to Jennie Wade Sunday afternoon in Falls Cemetery, O.J. Neighbors, former city superintendent of schools, expressed the idea that while Miss Wade seemed to be a little old woman who never lived in high style, but in a miserly manner, much the way of a hermit, she possessed deep currents through her life that were probably inspired by the fact that she graduated from Wabash High School when she was 27 years of age.

When the time came for her to make her will, she left her property, about $30,000 with the interest to be used for scholarships for worthy boys and girls to enable them to further their schooling. Mr. Neighbours said, "Jennie Wade really needs no monument because the 80 boys and girls who received the benefits and the things they have accomplished in life together with the fact that they have larger visions in life are her monuments." He went on to say that while she needs no monument, these people desired to give and show their appreciation because of the benefits they received.

At the top of the monument is a symbol of the lighted torch of knowledge and the inscription is "Dedicated to the memory of Jennie Wade, 1847-1923. Generous and thoughtful donor of a continuous fund for educating Wabash County boys and girls. Erected by those who have benefitted."

Hubert F. Oswalt was master of ceremonies; the invocation was given by the Rev. Sam Erick; L.H. Carpenter represented the Jennie Wade fund; Mrs. Harry Slayman gave a tribute representing the students and a floral tribute was given by Mrs. Slayman and Mrs. Robert Wenger. A small crowd attended.
