He first married Mary A. Duncan, on December 2, 1852, in Crawford County, Illinois. Of their two daughters, one only survived two weeks. Mary died on October 22, 1859 and he married Narcissa Eglantine CARSON ON May 6, 1861, in Madisonville, Tennessee. They had one son and five daughters. Narcissa died on August 24, 1873 and he married her sister, Phoebe Talmonia Carson in Illinois in 1876. They had no children.
He was a master carpenter. He died on April 6, 1891, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, at the age of 61, and was buried there.
