1st and 2nd wives were sisters. CSA Enlisted on 11 Jun 1861 in GA in Co F, GA 12th Inf Reg as Pvt; Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 15 Dec 1862. Sep 19 1864 injuries recieved, captured and released as unfit for service. He survived the war, and he returned to Dooly Co, GA to engage in farming until 1870 when he began a cotton brokerage at Montezuma.

From "Historical and Genealogical Collections of Dooly County Georgia Volume III," Compiled by Nora and Watts Powell, c. 1975 self published Vienna, Ga, Library of Congress Card Cat. NO. 73-81043 p. 85, paraphrased somewhat:
"Captain J. M. Brown born about 1842 and died in 1931, is the son of William F. Brown and wife, Martha E. Brown. His father, William F., was born about 1814 and died in Dooly County in Sept of 1862 (burial unknown). Captain J.M. Brown had siblings: John (born abt 1836), Thomas W (born about 1838) Sarah L (born about 1840 and married James Fudge), and Hurschall V (born about 1848.). All the children were born in Georgia. Page 85 also states that Captain Wood was the uncle of Mrs. B. M. Wood and Mrs. E.S. Lasseter."
