Michael Sean Crouther, 38, of Jackson, Miss. and formerly of Coldwater, died Monday, February 20, 2006 at Tupelo, Miss. He was a Coach and an Educator. Services were held Saturday, February 25 at Second Baptist Church with interment at Hammond Hill Cemetery in Senatobia.

Mr. Crouther is survived by his parents, Charles and Emma Louise Crouther of Coldwater; and two brothers, Rodney T. Crouther of Austin, Texas and Eric T. Crouther of Coldwater.

Below is Michael's obit from his web site:

Michael Sean Crouther, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Crouther, attended Coldwater Elementary and Coldwater High School. In high school he was a member of the Band, Beta Club, Student Council, and the varsity basketball team. He graduated with honors in the class of 1985. He continued his education at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, Tougaloo College in Ridgeland, MS (just outside of Jackson), and did graduate study the University of Mississippi.

Because his father was an educator and coach, Michael literally grew up in the gymnasium. Michael became a teacher and basketball coach first at Piney Woods Country Life High School for six years, where he lead his team to the 1996 Class 2A State Championship and returned to the Championship game the following year. After leaving Piney Woods, Michael become the head coach at Lafayette County High School in Oxford, MS. He directed the Commodores to a first- or second- place finish in the 4A Division for four consecutive years.

Michael's teaching skills and dedication to his students in the classroom did not take a back seat to his coaching as he received commendations from students and administrators for his zest for teaching. As coach, he personally monitored his players' grades, homework, and behavior. He always demanded their best efforts. Michael was affectionately known as 'Coach C' by his students. Michael was in his second year as teacher and boys' basketball coach at Northwest Rankin High School in Brandon, MS when he was tragically killed in an automobile accident on February 20, 2006.

Michael's family and many friends throughout the world have contributed to establishing this scholarship to honor his memory and to continue his legacy of inspiring youth to respect themselves and others and to bring out the champion within them. We thank those who have taken the time to apply as well as your interest in this award.
