John was the son of John Jordon O'Berry and Sarah (Bassett) O'Berry. He served in the Civil War as a Confederate soldier in the 4th Georgia Calvalry, Company G; enlisting on May 1, 1862 and was honorably discharged on May 19, 1865. John was sick and was left by his officers in the care of a family in Florida on April 23, 1864. At that time, the 4th Georgia Calvalry was near Orange Springs, Florida and returned to Camp Mercer, Georgia. They had been sent down to Florida on February 13, 1864, and were engaged in the Battle of Ocean Pond on February 20th and the skirmishes around Palatka afterwards. From the information on John's 1909 CSA Pension Application, he moved to Florida on December 20, 1866. On January 9, 1868 he married Miss Mary Frances Jones in Hernando County, Florida. In 1887, John and Mary donated property for a school, a church, and other public buildings in Blanton, Florida. They were one of the founding families of Pasco County, Florida and there is a plaque at the old courthouse to honor the first settlers that came to call Pasco County home. John and Mary owned 100 acres and were farmers, grain planters, and orange growers.
