Pioneer, Principal Assistant Postmaster of the city of Chicago (retired 1860). Founding member, along with his wife Mary Huntington Eager Starkweather, of the Second Presbyterian Church of Chicago (June 1, 1842), received by letter from the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago.

Father of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Chicago (1846 and 1857). Crowned Active Member of the Supreme Council, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction on May 15, 1857 and Deputy for the States of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin (1863-1865). Member o:f Apollo Lodge, No. 32 (Secretary in 1845) and Oriental Lodge, No. 33, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons (present at first meeting on August 9, 1845); Lafayette Chapter, No. 2, Royal Arch Masons (Exalted December 2, 1844); Chicago Council, No. 4, Royal and Select Masters (charter member in 1854); Apollo Commandery, No. 1, Knights Templar (first candidate for the Illustrious Order of the Red Cross on May 20, 1845; received Order of the Temple on June 13, 1845 and then served as Recorder).
