"Willcox man dies in accident in Texas Canyon
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 on Monday which claimed the life of 40-year-old Sammy Montano of Willcox. According to Highway Patrolman Martin Tapia, Montano, driving westbound in a 1975 Chevrolet flatbed truck, was apparently headed to a job site in Tucson. Montano was employed by Bill's Pump Service, a family-owned, well-service operation in Willcox. Tapia said the crash occurred just after 8 a.m., at mile marker 315 near Texas Canyon. He said the truck, which was carrying well-pump equipment and pipes, rolled and skidded on its roof into a granite wall embankment. Tapia said witness accounts indicate the truck momentarily weaved and veered slightly onto the median and rolled after the driver apparently overcorrected. Tapia said the pipes and equipment crushed the truck's cab compartment killing the driver instantly. "We had a nurse stop and she couldn't find any vital signs," Tapia said. Traffic on the interstate was snarled but not stopped. Tapia said the righthand westbound lane remained closed until about 1:30 p.m. He said follow up investigation currently under way is routine and a matter of policy anytime fatalities occur. "It doesn't appear that a seat-belt would have made a difference in this case," Tapia said, noting authorities are unsure if Montano was wearing one. Tapia added DPS is investigating whether or not faulty equipment from the older-model truck may have contributed to the crash, stressing that also is customary procedure."
