This is a letter written by Robert to another cousin Lorraine Redifer Sherman who lived in New Orleans at the time. ( There are no corrections to the original )

14, September, 1981
Dear Lorraine
I wish I could give you more help, but my father can and will give you much more then myself.. He and I assume that your maiden name was Lorraine Redifer, and we have never heard of a Lorraine Redifer. He can provide you with a lot of information on the Redifer " Roots" as he has been one much longer then I.

I can give you my own history like I was born at a very early age. As you might see, I have a very good, or at least domineering sense of humor. I was born as the first of 2 male children to Robert Yale Redifer and Edith Elenora " McVey " Redifer. I was born on 12/07/1944 in Toledo, Oregon.
At the age of about 1-2 weeks I was moved to the home in Newport, Oregon where I grew up, went to school, and made a lot of friends and almost no enemies. I never got into any trouble and have never been arrested, civilian or military.I stayed in Oregon at home until I was a teenager and then for only one night when we went to Washington for a short vacation.
I joined the Navy after I graduated from high school and was on active duty from Oct 1963, until May 1979 when I got very sick. I am now unemployable and will not work forever. My discharge date was 10 May 1980. I was placed on the Temporary Duty Retirement list which will be permanet after 5 years.
I was trained mainly in electronics in the Navy and was a First Class Fire Control Technician when I got out. The abbreviation for Fire Control Tech is AQ and I loved it most of the time. Fire Control has nothing to do with fires. It is weapon control, .The term AQ is aviation fire control. My thing was to troubleshoot the malfunctions of computers etc. Idid successfully complete A",B', and several "C' schools.
My sickness " desease" I contacted was viral encephalitis which does have a very damaging effect on the mind and brain. It is caused by a virus and if one resistance is down he can get it.Mine was very far down, so I got it. I had existed on less then 4 hours sleep/day for over 3 years, and I was exhausted.
That is all I can tell you about me and my father and brother may be able to give you more.
I would like the finished report when it is finished.
Sincerely Robert M. Redifer

One cannot honor a man and his life in such a short space, you can never say all the right things, maybe his son will add more.
Robert died before the genealogy was finished, out of respect I would like to add his memorial and let him know we are thinking of him and he is not forgotten , even by many that never met him.He wanted to see the finished report.
My grandmother Ada Redifer always kept paper, books whatever to sign when people came to visit. I have a book here with a loose paper in it, Redifer Family Reunion guests, May 27th 1951.
There are many signatures including Roberts', his brother Donald, his father Yale and his grandfather Ira.

My sister and I could not figure out who Tony Joe was.
Robert's son Tyson Redifer wrote below:

I spoke to my mom about that. Apparantly Yale wanted to name him Robert McVey and Edith(called Maxine) wanted to name him Anthony Joseph. Yale won, but Mom Bee, as I called her, said she'll call him Tony Joe and that stuck...shortened to Tony later :)
