Hazel Ann Abernathy of Culpeper, Virginia, has passed from this life at Amerisist Assisted Living in Culpeper Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the age of 92; two days from turning 93. Hazel was born in Maryland to E.K. Berry and Sadie Kane Berry on September 19, 1916 and was a retired telephone operator.

Surviving Hazel is her son Ronald L. "Ron" Abernathy and his wife Debbie of Irvine, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Darrin Abernathy and his wife Janet of Hoover, Alabama, Dean Abernathy and his wife Erin of Lexington, Kentucky, Mathew and Andrew Abernathy of Irvine, Kentucky and four great-grandchildren.

Along with her parents, her husband Wilbur Joe Abernathy, a son, Richard Berry, a sister, Bee Smith and a brother, Edward Berry preceded her in death.

Graveside services were privately held on Friday, September 18, 2009 at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Bealeton, Virginia with Barbara Jamison conducting services.

There will be a gathering for family and friends held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Amerisist Assisted Living, 215 Southridge Parkway, Culpeper, Virginia 22701.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Rapidan, P.O. Box 1715, Culpeper, Virginia 22701.
