Dr. Leonard Posey

Dr. E. Leonard Posey, Jr., gentleman, scholar, and retired Jackson physician, died at Methodist Rehabilitation Center on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, of complications following a fall.

Dr. Posey was born on September 23, 1919, the son of the late prominent Jackson physician Dr. Ernest L. Posey and the late Ethel Smith Posey. Dr. Posey graduated from Central High School, attended Washington and Lee University, and graduated with honors from Mississippi College, where he was a cheerleader, an active member of the Drama and Choral Society, a member of the tennis team, and editor of the school magazine. Entering Central High as a seventh grader, he was struck by a petite blonde wearing a bright red tam, Elta Robinson. She became the love of his life; and he, hers. They married in 1941.

Dr. and Mrs. Posey began their life together in New Orleans, where he received his medical degree from Tulane University and interned at Touro Infirmary. They moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where Dr. Posey completed his specialty training in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He also received the degree of Master of Science in Medicine from the University of Minnesota and was awarded membership in the Mayo Foundation chapter of the Society of Sigma Xi, honorary scientific fraternity. During his years at Mayo, Dr. Posey developed the Clinic's first gastrointestinal motility research laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Charles Cade and Dr. J. Arnold Bargen. He published a number of scientific papers on his findings. He also published the results of a research project conducted with Nobel laureate Dr. E. C. Kendall on the reserve function of the adrenal gland in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Returning to Jackson in 1949, Dr. Posey opened his office, the Posey, Stephenson Clinic. Over time the practice grew to become The Medical Clinic (later the Jackson Medical Clinic and presently the Premier Medical Group.) Dr. Posey was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Gastroenterology. He was a member of the Mississippi, Southern, and American Medical Associations, and was a governing board member of the American College of Gastroenterology. He was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Gastroenterological Association.

In 1952, Dr. and Mrs. Posey built a home in Woodland Hills, where they raised their two children, Leonard and Elta Lea, and lived happily for 50 years.

Dr. Posey was Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where for many years he also directed a research laboratory devoted to gastrointestinal pharmacophysiology and ultramorphology. His publications in a number of medical journals and texts gained him a national reputation. He was also a consultant in gastroenterology to the Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was a guest lecturer at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, Temple University in Philadelphia, the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, and the Mayo Clinic. He served as a consulting physician to several corporations: MP&L (now Entergy); First National Bank (now Trustmark); Mississippi Chemical; Miller Transporters; and Mississippi Valley Gas. Dr. Posey also conducted clinical research projects for Robbins, Merrill, and Wyeth, national pharmaceutical corporations. In 1972, Dr. Posey was forced into premature retirement by complications from a severe health problem.

Dr. Posey was a past member of the Jackson Rotary Club, the Hundred Club of Jackson, the Jackson Club and the Newcomen Society of North America. He served as president of the Jackson Music Association and the Knife and Fork Club, and as a board member of the United Givers Fund. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a Life Deacon, and where for several years he taught Sunday School. Dr. Posey was the longest-living congregant of First Baptist Church, joining with his family when the church was located on Capitol Street in 1922. For 10 years he served as president of the Woodland Hills Conservation Association.

In 2002, the Poseys gave up caring for their home and moved to The Orchard in Ridgeland. Mrs. Posey moved to Campbell Cove in 2007, following complications from a hip fracture. Dr. Posey visited her every day until his last illness.

Their son, Dr. E. Leonard Posey, III, predeceased him in 1986.

Their daughter, Elta Posey Johnston, and her husband, Dr. James H. Johnston, live in Jackson. He is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, Kimberly Posey Lane (husband, Mitch; children Max and Mason) of Denver; Lawton Posey Cummings (husband, Craig; children, Addie and Cooper) of Arlington, Virginia; Douglas Posey (children, Brenden and Abbey) of Denver; Lea Johnston (husband, Wes Jones; son, Charlie) of Gainesville, Florida; and Brannan Johnston (fiancee, Tamsyn Phifer) of New York City.

Dr. Posey was a man with a deep and abiding faith. His love of God and his love for his family animated his life. He had a towering intellect and near-perfect recall. He read widely and deeply and was able to provide perceptive comments on a dazzling and apparently limitless number of topics. He loved poetry, art, music, gardening and flowers. He presented himself beautifully to the end, arriving for his daily visit with his beloved Elta dressed to the nines. They were quite a pair.

Visitation will be from 4 pm to 6 pm Sunday, September 20, 2009, at Wright and Ferguson on High Street. Funeral services will be on Monday, September 21, at 10 am at the Chapel of First Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Box 250, Jackson 39205; or to French Camp Academy, One Fine Place, French Camp, MS 39745.
