Funeral Services Held Wednesday for John Finlayson
Funeral services for John Calvin Finlayson of Buffalo Center were held Wednesday, October 31 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. W.G. Gerthe officiating.
Pallbearers consisted of Tony Geiken, Joe Wubben, Art Larson, Pete Murra, Bert Mayer and Folkert J. Winter and interment was at Olena Mound Cemetery at Buffalo Center.
John Calvin Finlayson passed away last Sunday [October 28, 1962] afternoon at the hospital following a series of heart attacks. He had been bedfast for the last three weeks. He had reached the age of 57 years.
The story of his life begins December 5, 1904, when he was born into the home of Calvin and Lettie Finlayson. The family farmed near Armstrong, Iowa. When John was about 6 years old the family moved to the Buffalo Center community. Here he attended the local school and then graduated from high school in 1923. Listening from an upstairs window, as someone told his mother about the Lord Jesus Christ at the front door, John heard about his need of the Saviour too, and though only overhearing the conversation, the Holy Spirit brought conviction to his own heart and he asked Jesus Christ to be his Lord and Saviour as well. The Finlayson family attended the First Congregational Church here in Buffalo Center. In 1930 John followed the Lord Jesus Christ in baptism at the Swea City Baptist Church where Rev. George Siemens was the pastor.
On September 8, 1932 he was united in marriage to Miss Alta Zenor here in Buffalo Center by Rev. M.R. Siemens. On February 28, 1935 John and his wife united with the First Baptist Church here where they have been members since.
John's occupation during his lifetime was farming and he was a resident of this community for over 50 years. During these years he attended Iowa State Agriculture College at Ames and completed a number of terms at the Moody Bible School in Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother Harry in 1938 and his brother Wilbur in 1939. He was also preceded in death by two of his children, his infant son John Eldon in 1934 and his son Morris in 1939.
There remains behind to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs. Alta Finlayson, as well as his daughter, Arlys, Mrs. Donald Tuttle from Carlisle, Iowa; son Roger of Mason City, Iowa; his daughter Elaine, Mrs. Richard Nye of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter Lola, Mrs. Edward Elson of Norfolk, Virginia; son David, now with the armed forces at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; his daughter Bonna of Mason City; his sons Donald and Steven, and daughters Miriam and Audrey, the latter still at home here in Buffalo Center. He is also survived by his brother, Robert of San Diego, California as well as five grandchildren, and numerous other relatives, friends and neighbors.
