John was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church of Columbus. He was self-employed with Hill Insurance Agency, established with his father, Edwin M. Hill and brother Baron P. Hill.
Born Jan. 23, 1931, in Seymour, he was the son of Edwin Merrill and Edith Stella Goens Hill, both of whom preceded him in death.
John graduated from Seymour High School where he was a multi-sport letterman for the Seymour Owls. He kept his competive spirit and personal values for fair play and sportsmanship, making him successful as a husband, father and businessman.
Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 1951, in Seymour, he married his high school sweetheart, Norma Jeanne Hart, who preceded him in death Oct. 21, 2001, their marriage lasting 49 years, 10 months and 28 days, only weeks short of their 50th wedding anniversary.
He is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Gayle Michelle (Branden) Whalbring and John Matthew Hill; two great-grandchildren, Kelly and Lexi Whalbring; sister, Linda (Willard) Hackman; and brothers, Tony Hill, Duke Hill, Bode (Carol) Hill and Baron (Betty) Hill, daughter-in-law, Gaye Johnson Hill and a special niece, Robin Hart Gaffney.
He was preceded in death by his sons, John Michael Hill and Brian Scott Hill, a brother, Mark Wayne Hill and an infant brother.
The Rev. Mark Teike will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Voss Chapel, Seymour. Burial will take place at Riverview Cemetery, Seymour.
There will be a Voss dove release.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of South Central Indiana.
Pallbearers will be Bode Hill, Duke Hill, Baron Hill, David Hill and Matthew Hill.
