Ben was a civil engineering graduate of THE CITADEL, Charleston, SC, in 1907. He served in France during WWI. He was a lieutenant in the 11th Engineers of the American Expeditionary Force in France.

After returning home, he established the Pickens County Concrete business about 1924. During his career he gained the reputation as the best bridge builder in South Carolina.

Ben was a longtime member of the Easley Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon and later, an elder.
