Caroline Mueller/Miller was born in Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany on 21 January 1832. She immigrated to the United States about 1857 and married Mathias Erschen on 22 July 1858 in All Saints Catholic Church in St Charles County, Missouri.

Mathias and Carrie were the parents of nine children: Dorothea, Franz Mathias "Frank", Caroline "Carrie" Finefield, Mary, Elisabeth, Dorothea J "Dora" Stahler, Gertrude Ahrens, Nicholas and Theresa Ahrens.
