Hugh Emerson Adams passed away Tuesday, December 30, at the age of 83. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Hugh Adams Sr. and Fern Pauline (Smith) Adams on January 26th, 1925. Hugh Jr. (known to both family and friends as H.E.) attended public schools in Kansas City, Missouri, and graduated from Central High School in 1941. Although only 16 years of age at the time, HE obtained a full-time job at the City National bank, 18th and Grand, Kansas City , Missouri. He worked there until enlisting in the Marines. November, 1942. He was a member of the Second Marine Division and participated in Island Battles -Tarwa, Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa and in defense of New Zealand during the Solomon Island Guadalcanal campaign. When WWII ended and the Japanese surrendered in September, platoon Sergeant Adams was part of the original occupation forces that landed in Nagasaki shortly after the atomic bombing. Because of the exposure to radiation, Adams was considered to be an atomic survivor. A few weeks later, Adams was discharged at Great Lake Naval Station, December 8, 1945 and returned home to Kansas City, Missouri. There he met Betty Jean Bowersox from Hamilton, Missouri. The couple married March 16, 1946. Mr. Adams worked in the Accounting Department of Skelly Oil from 1946-1953. He began working fro the Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, a non-profit organization, operating hospitals and homes fro the aged. His last position there was Assistant General Superintendent. In 1962, he started his own business, I.M.C.C., working as a private consultant, advising hospitals and nursing homes. He ran for the Kansas State Senate in 1972. In 1980, he was the Hospital Administrator in Ellsworth, Kansas. He retired in 1988 while living in Salina, Kansas. Betty and H.E. moved to Springfield in 1994, and resided there at the time of his death. Survivors include his wife, Betty, daughters Karen Calnan and husband Craig of Joplin, Missouri, and son John Mark Adams and wife Nancy of Lamar, Missouri, Rebecca Martin of Lawrence Kansas, and Nancy Rivers and spouse Robert seven grandchildren: Amy Augustine, Tyler and Samuel Martin, Allison and Emily Adams, and Connor and Clare Rivers, and one sister, Marion R. Diamond of Lee's Summit, Missouri. Mr. Adams was a life member of the Second Marine Division Association, the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He was active in church and community organizations. Visitations will be Thursday, January 1 from 6-8 p.m. at the Greenlawn South Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 815 E. Plainview, Springfield on Friday, January 2 at 9:30 a.m. Military final rites will follow at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery, Springfield, Missouri. Memorial contributions can be made to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Springfield, Missouri, or the Ozark Riverview Manor, Ozark Missouri.
