ONEIDA >> David H. Alvord, 55, of 580 Seneca St, died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 5, 1958, in Canastota, a son of Harlan and Jane Shay Alvord. He was a 1976 graduate of Oneida High School. Following high school he entered Colgate University, and graduated magna cum laude, with his degree in political science, in 1980.
While at Colgate, he served on numerous alumni committees and was the editor of the school newspaper. David was employed by the Oneida Public Library, and served as past president and treasurer of the Friends of the Library. He wrote many articles for the Oneida Dispatch, including his well-known ""Remember When"" column. He had been a volunteer for the Madison County Historical Society.
Surviving is his mother, Jane, of Oneida, with whom he resided; three brothers, William Daily of Seneca Falls, Marc and Kim Alvord, of Oneida, Dennis and Karen Alvord, of Oneida; two sisters, Peggy and James Arnold, of Virginia Beach and Donna Northrup, of Oneida. He was predeceased by his father, Harlan in 1998; two sisters, Judy Daggett and Sandra Vecchio and a brother, Larry Daily.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 13, 2014 at 4 p.m. from the Coolican-McSweeney Funeral Home, 322 Washington Ave., Oneida, with the Rev. Stewart Wattles, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneida, officiating. Interment will be made in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Wampsville. Friends may call on Sunday from 12-4 p.m. preceding the service. Contributions may be made to the Oneida Public Library, Broad St. Oneida.
