Billy L. Smith age 65 of Kingston passed away Sunday September 20, 2009 at Roane Medical Center. He was a retired teacher from Cherokee Middle School and coached girls basketball for 25 years and was a football official for 20 years. He had a Honorable discharge from being in the Army for 5 years and was awarded 3 Bronze Stars. Mr Smith was a medic in the Army, and flew in a chopper to pick up the wounded. He also received several other awards. He was a rifle expert and received medals for outstanding target shooting. He was an avid runner in several marathons and races. He ran in the Peach Tree Road Race with his sister Betty daughter Wendy and brother-in-law Tom. Mr. Smith and his Son in law John Savage also owned a race car team named Savage and Smith Racing. He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Jane Liggett Smith.
Funeral 7pm Tuesday September 22, 2009 in the Kyker Chapel with the Rev. Donnie Hill and the Rev. Nick Hill officiating. Burial 11am Wednesday in Lawnville Cemetery with military honors given by the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Gurard. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7pm Tuesday at the Kyker Funeral Home in Kingston
