Robert E. Barnes was killed in action, along with scores of his comrades, when US Navy anti-aircraft guns shot down numerous US planes during Operation Husky near Gela, Sicily. Robert was a member of the 81mm mortar platoon, headquarters company, 2nd battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division.
