Mrs. Smith was born on December 11, 1931 in Kirkland. She was the daughter of the late Robert Chancey and Laura Virginia Kelly Murray and was the youngest of 11 children. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Mr. Joseph J. Smith, Sr. and her infant granddaughter Christy Lynn Smith. Also preceding her are her siblings; Alma, Evelyn, Sadie, Eva, Robert, Ben, George, Buck, and Mary and a very special niece Nancy.
Surviving are her children JoAnn Walton and her husband Geary, Joseph J. Smith, Jr. and his wife Crystal, and Jeanette Edens and her husband Chris, Sr. She was "Mamaw" to her precious grandchildren; Jerry Kevin Walton, Michelle Walton Crain and Jeff, Joseph J. Smith, III and Alena, Jeffery Scott Smith and Erin, Laura Kelly Edens Mauldin and Matthew, and Chris Edens, Jr. She was blessed with 7 great-grandchildren; Maggie and Brewer Smith, Zoe and Jax Smith, Austin Mauldin, and Joshua Crain. She also leaves behind her beloved sister Jessie Piner and many nieces and nephews that loved and cherished the time spent with their Aunt Betty Ann.
She loved the Lord and served him faithfully throughout her life in teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Hampstead Baptist Church and was most recently a member at Scotts Hill Baptist Church. She loved her family and was a true southern homemaker welcoming everyone into her kitchen to feast at her table. Her nephew David put into words what so many of us always felt. He said of his memories at Betty Ann's and Hoodley's- "their home was like my own, because I felt so welcomed and wanted. They wanted me there, and as a kid, I never knew any other reality."
Pallbearers will be Kevin Walton, David Howard, Chuck Hardee, George Murray, Benny Murray, and Tyler Poole. Honorary Pallbearers are Mike and Dan Piner, Buddy and Jeffery Sneeden, Bob Howard, Bobby Murray, Bucky Murray, and Phillip Murray.
A celebration of her life will be at Scotts Hill Baptist Church on Thursday, September 24th at 2pm. Burial will be at Oleander Memorial Gardens. Rev. Jim Dunn and Rev. Andy Ickes will officiate. In honor of her generous southern hospitality, the family invites you to join them after the services for supper in the Family Life Center of Scotts Hill Baptist Church.
Flowers are welcome, however, memorials may be sent to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Marsha Fretwell, and her staff; Tammy Arms, NP, Marlene, Penny, and Candy. Caregivers; Faith, Penny, Christy, Shelia, Christina W., Laura, Christina B., Holly, Katie, Jennifer, Ashley, and Mrs. Marion Reed and Liz Rochelle of Care Providers. You were her friends and she loved you dearly. You all made a difference in the quality of Mama's life and we will forever be grateful.
