Following a valiant 8 ½ year battle with cancer, our beloved husband and father, Laverne Eugene Akers, age 59, passed peacefully away in his home surrounded by his immediate family on September 22, 2009, in Mountain View, Stone County, Arkansas.

He was born on June 15, 1950, in Audubon County, Iowa, to Nyle and Eva May Bancroft Akers.

He grew up in Exira, Iowa and attended Exira High School. After his high school graduation he attended Ames University until his marriage to Joyce Elaine Glines in 1970. He served in the Untied States Air Force at the Regional Hospital of Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas as a psychiatric aid unit his honorable release in January 1975. In August 1978 he received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls.

Laverne worked in the off-shore oil rigs, working his way up from field crew to crew manager during his 20 years of employment for Haliburton out of Galveston, Texas. He retired to the Mountain View area in 2000 where he enjoyed woodworking and remodeling his home. Laverne and Joyce remarried in December 1994.

He is survived by his wife Joyce, his father Nyle Akers of Exira, Iowa and his children and their spouses: Kobi and Mary Akers of Houston, Texas; Araminta May of Arkansas; Angeline (his daughter by his ex-wife Cynthia) and Leon Buschow of Dallas, Texas; Natasha Akers of Mountain View; step-daughters: Mistie and Milton Welch of Arizona; Melba and Jeff Phelps of Houston, Texas; thirteen grandchildren and his brother and sisters: Karen and David McElwain of Wayne, Nebraska; Jeanette and Steve Ferin of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Ken and Tami Akers of Sarasota, Florida; Cathy and Brad Baldwin of McDonough, Georgia; Shirley and Dean Chestnut of Casey, Iowa and his ex-wife Elizabeth Galene Wilcox.

He was preceded in death by his mother Eva May Akers and his brother Duane Akers.

He was buried in Exira, Iowa Cemetery. Roller Coffman Funeral Home, Mtn. View was in charge of the arrangements
