Mabel Elaine Whetzel, 76, Bridgewater died September 23, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for over a week.

Mrs. Whetzel was born on Feb. 21, 1933, in the Singers Glen area of Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Lewis Stroop and Gertrude Sheldon Fulk Stroop. She had worked in the past at F&J Restaurant and at Rose's Restaurant and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Harrisonburg Eagles Aerie No. 4150 and the Rion Bowman VFW Post 632 Auxiliary. She was a member of the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Burnell Whetzel.

Surviving are two sons, Larry A. Whetzel, Bridgewater and Bobby J. Whetzel, Singers Glen; her fiance`, Lloyd Swecker, Bridgewater; three brothers, Clarence Stroop, Roy Stroop and Elwood Stroop, all of Singers Glen; five sisters, Frances Hill, Harrisonburg, Shirley Keister, Manassas, Rachel Whetzel, New Market, Ruby Patterson, Harrisonburg, and Donna Cubbage, Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Taylor and Hannah Whetzel

Mrs. Whetzel was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Lane Whetzel and Ronnie Burnell Whetzel; four half brothers, Oliver Stroop, Paul Stroop, Harold Stroop, Howard Stroop; and one half sister, Viola Ward.

The Rev. William Staton will conduct a funeral service Saturday at 2 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Singers Glen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
