Ambrose Nims McNeil, of Roanoke, Va., departed this life on Thursday, September 24, 2009. Born in Franklin County, Va., on October 25, 1912, to Pearl Nims and Henry Lee McNeil, "Mc" was a veteran of World War II, having proudly served his country from 1942 until 1945 in the United States Army Air Force. His siblings, Ernest McNeil, Hughes McNeil, Ned McNeil and Mary McNeil Murray predecease him. He is survived by his wife, Daisy Hare McNeil, of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Alice McNeil Altice, of Rocky Mount; and four daughters and their families, Karen Charlton Dinsmore, of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Sharon Charlton Wrenn, of Bedford County, Va., Glenna Charlton Dowdy and her husband, Larry, of Roanoke, Va., and Glenda Charlton Middleton and her husband, Leon, of Covington, Va. "Mc" is also survived by five grandchildren, Robert Todd Grubb, of Tega Cay, S.C., Christopher Andrew Wrenn, of Roanoke, Va., Shannon Lee Wrenn, of San Diego, Calif., Brian Middleton and Ryan Charlton Middleton, of Covington, Va.; as well as five great-grandchildren, Brandon Todd Grubb, of Charlotte, N.C., Mariah Chase Grubb, of LeSage, W.Va., Jenna Paige Wrenn, of Roanoke, Va., and Andrew and Kinsey Middleton, of Covington, Va. His special friend, "Chipper," gave him great enjoyment and companionship beyond measure. "Mc" was retired from the Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Board and was a member of the B.P.O.E. and the American Legion. A memorial service celebrating "Mc's" life will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Oakey's North Chapel, Roanoke, Va., with Dr. Kevin B. Meadows of Grandin Court Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be private.
