Woodrow Eugene Best, 80, of Turkey City, died Sunday morning, April 20, 2003, in Somerset Medical Center, Somerville, N.J., following a short illness. Born Feb. 20, 1923, in Turnip Hole, he was the son of Marion B. and Grace Heeter Best. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a line sergeant in the European Theater. Mr. Best was retired from Glass Containers in Knox after 28 years of service. He previously worked as a pipe fitter for Walker Drilling. He was an active member of St. Mark United Church of Christ in Monroe, Knox RD, where he served as deacon for a number of years. Mr. Best enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, along with visiting and traveling with his family. He was married Sept. 10, 1949, to Phyllis Jane Myers, who died May 26, 2002.
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Cathy and Jerome Vinski of Bridgewater, N.J., and Jane and Rick Foust of Homer City; four grandchildren, Eric Foust and wife, Rhonda, of Shippensburg, Katherine Foust of Philadelphia, Emma Vinski and Adam Vinski of Bridgdewater, N.J.; and one great-grandson, Noah Foust of Shippensburg. He also is survived by four sisters, Pauline Wile of Knox, Leanore Knight of Lamartine, Mrs. Dean (Charlotte) Shoup of Emlenton and Mrs. Richard (Donna) Kline of Knox; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Best was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the William N. Rupert Mortuary in Knox. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Nancy Dunmire, interim pastor of St. Mark United Church of Christ, officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association or to St. Mark United Church of Christ.
